Sony has started printing the end of physical PlayStation games on the boxes of the consoles that play them.
Disc-based PS5 units arriving at retailers now carry a notice on the packaging, repeated in several languages:
"Important notice: from January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PS Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on this console."
Why this is more significant than it looks
Packaging changes are slow. Artwork gets approved, plates get made, cartons get printed in enormous runs and shipped worldwide months ahead of the consoles inside them.
A company weighing a reversal does not commit the decision to millions of retail boxes. This is Sony spending real money to make the January 2028 date physically permanent on its own product, at exactly the moment an organised boycott is demanding it change course.
The wording is also carefully protective. It is a disclosure aimed at the person standing in a shop about to buy a disc-reading console — telling them, before purchase, that the format has an end date. That is the language of a company managing consumer-law exposure, not one testing the water.
What it actually confirms
Two things, both already known but now printed on a box:
New games stop being pressed after January 2028. Digital only, whether bought from PS Store or as a code at a retailer.
Discs you already own keep working. The notice says so explicitly: games released before January 2028 continue to play on the console. That has been Sony's position since the original announcement and it has not shifted.
What it does not say
The notice is silent on the question everyone actually wants answered: whether future PlayStation hardware will read discs at all. It speaks only about this console and this format's end date.
That silence is doing a lot of work, and we set out why in the 2028 collision.
If you are buying a PS5 now
The notice does not change the calculation so much as make it explicit. A disc-drive PS5 is the machine that plays the entire pre-2028 physical library — a library that stops growing but never shrinks, and which includes the whole of this generation.
If you own discs, buy second-hand, or want 4K Blu-ray playback, the drive is worth more than it was a year ago. If you have been fully digital for years, none of this touches you.
Our full breakdown is in what the 2028 disc cutoff means for your PS5, and the hardware decision itself in which PS5 should you buy.
