PlayStation Plus comes in three tiers, and Sony's own comparison table is not much help, because it lists features rather than answering the question people actually have: is the expensive one worth it for me?
The honest answer turns on one thing — whether you will genuinely play games from a rotating library, or whether you just want to play online with friends.

The first thing to take from that table has nothing to do with tiers: paying monthly is dreadful value. On Essential you hand over an extra $51.89 a year for the privilege. If you are going to subscribe at all, subscribe annually.
What you get
Essential is the baseline, and the only tier most people strictly need:
- Online multiplayer for games that require it
- Monthly games — a handful of titles each month, yours to keep while you stay subscribed
- 100GB of cloud save storage
- Member discounts in the store
Extra adds the Game Catalog: several hundred downloadable PS4 and PS5 titles you can install and play at will, plus Ubisoft+ Classics. The catalog rotates — titles come and go.
Premium adds the Classics Catalog of older PlayStation games, time-limited game trials, and cloud streaming, including 4K streaming for supported PS5 titles.
The one question that decides it
Be honest about this: will you actually play games you did not specifically choose?
Some people work through a rotating catalog happily and get enormous value. Others have a backlog they bought deliberately, play those, and never open the catalog. The second group is paying $55 a year over Essential for a library they will not touch.
There is a cheap way to find out. Subscribe to Extra for one month at $16.99 and see whether you install something from the catalog and finish it. Installing is not the test — finishing is. If a month passes and you played nothing from it, Essential is your tier, and you learned that for the price of one month.
For trophy hunters, the maths changes
This is where the calculation genuinely differs from a general gaming audience.
The Game Catalog is not a library of games to you. It is a library of trophy lists — several hundred of them, at no marginal cost per title. A hunter who works through catalog games systematically extracts far more from Extra than someone playing one game at a time, because the value scales with how many lists you start, not how many games you love.
Premium goes further in a way that is easy to miss. The Classics Catalog is the only practical route to a body of older PlayStation trophy lists without buying ageing hardware. One critical caveat: catalog games are borrowed, not kept. When a title leaves the catalog you lose access, mid-platinum or not. - You play online and want a few games a month: Essential, annual. $79.99.
- You have a thin backlog and enjoy variety: Extra, annual. The catalog is the whole product.
- You are a trophy hunter chasing breadth, or you want the older catalogue: Premium, annual.
- You do not play online and buy the games you want: none of them.
That last one deserves saying plainly, because it gets lost: you do not need PS Plus to play single-player games on PS5. It is required for online multiplayer and cloud saves, not for the console to function.
